Two Message Rules for New Business Web Site

Successful small business operators rarely bring sales experience to the enterprise when first starting out. Many new businesses are begun by operators with a craft or skill that establish a business around their particular business skill. Not surprisingly, many of these operators struggle to manage sales, finance and all the other necessary parts of a successful enterprise.

A major ally in prospecting for new clients has emerged though, as the internet allows even small companies to reach large numbers of prospective clients. In fact, many successful small businesses have enjoyed an increased revenue stream resulting from use of the internet in their overall market strategy.

But what exactly is the role of the internet in making sales? The craft of ‘selling’ usually depends upon establishing a business relationship that provides value to all participants in the transaction. Most of this interaction is of course personal in nature – especially for bigger ticket sales items.

Global companies pour huge sums into website development and internet research. The value to these companies is clear – a highly focused web page can yield increased revenue. Social networking, ordering on line and other (Software as a Service or SaaS) business models all provide testimony as to the ability of small enterprises to use the internet to support their sales efforts and build a customer base.

New start-up businesses must attract attention to generate revenue. The internet is an important part of this strategy just as it is for major companies. A web page that accurately delivers useful information can act as a company sales representative on a 24 hour basis.

New and small business can also use a process called “localization” to compete for customers as well. Businesses serving specific geographic areas such as Denver Furnace Repair or a Denver Graphic Designer are examples of new business websites that use the internet to attract new customers in a highly localized market.

For most new enterprises, investing in any marketing program is a difficult decision. After all, it is money spent without a specific guarantee of return. Still, an on-line internet presence can greatly support a new business venture by providing useful information that – over time – will attract customers

Attracting customers using a web page or blog then has two fairly simple requirements. Web pages for new enterprises should include both a: Specific call to action Clear “Value Proposition”

Call To Action – Sales managers worldwide continually exhort their troops to “ask for the sale!” Asking for the sale is the call to action that organizations request of those they are dealing with. With a web page however, actually asking for the sale may be inappropriate if the reader has just clicked onto the site. Asking the reader for a more risk-free response – such as providing her/his contact information is usually more effective.

New clients may not buy on line initially, but may be quite interested in learning how the small businesses products/services can benefit them. The web page ‘call to action’ then can be something as simple as asking the reader to fill out a simple response form so that the company can begin building an email network of prospects.

Value Proposition – Stating the actual value proposition can be tricky, but should provide a reasonable expectation of value received should the prospect agree to explore a relationship with the company. Setting these expectations can be made by presenting a bold value statement, such as “increase sales by up to 25% in one month by” These kinds of value statements or propositions not only grab the reader’s attention, but also provide a baseline expectation for the result. And without this expected value, potential clients would not have a reason to consider buying.

Accomplishing these two message objectives can greatly improve the amount of revenue the small business can generate. The website is an effective communication tool that can reach out to potential clients as well as compete with large companies to deliver valuable goods and services.
