Most of the rules and tips that are associated with writing for eZines and newsletters also apply to writing blog entries, though there are some truly important differences as well. If you keep these top ten tips for writing a blog entry in mind, you will be creating excellent blog content in no time at all.
1. The headline is the most important thing – You have about 6 seconds to attract attention from an Internet user before he clicks off your site and look somewhere else. This is about the same attention span of a two year old child, so you need a headline that is going to pull them in immediately, and capture their interest long enough to get them reading the rest.
2. Write in the same way that you talk – It is okay to use common expressions and to write conversationally. Let your blog be fluid, conversational and friendly, and your readers will keep coming back for more.
3. Proof read every entry and comment – Look for typos and for grammatical errors. Don’t publish spelling mistakes. Polish your content to show that you respect your readers.
4. Do use lists – Most blog readers skim copy rather than read it all the way through – One way to maximize your copy impact is to use lists. Bullet lists or numbered lists call attention to important points, and ensure that readers who are skimming will catch the most vital part of your post.
5. Be honest – Blogs that are written in an honest voice and truly show who the writer is are often the most popular. Remember, a critical component to a blog’s success is the community that develops around it. Represent yourself and your content honestly and openly and reader loyalty will undoubtedly grow.
6. Write tight – Omit unnecessary words. Choose a visual design that fits your voice. Unless the design is the point of your site, select colors and visual elements that support without dominating. Resist the temptation to add features, for it is often best to use only those few technical and design elements that support your mission. Don’t rush to replace a good design: you will grow bored with it long before your readers do.
Following what works will only get you so far. Experiment with new styles, even if it means taking criticism. Without moving forward, you’ll be left behind.
