“When am I actually in labor?”, Is one of the most common questions women ask. This is often hard to tell and needs to be diagnosed on a case to case basis. Everybody goes through labor in their own way and some women have more obvious signs than others.

Most of the time, when a woman goes into labor her belly changes in shape and this is one of the earliest signs. This happens when the baby moves down into the pelvic area in its preparation for labor. When this happens you will notice that bleeding gets a little bit easier than normal because of the reduced pressure placed on your diaphragm.

Some women mistake a “wee” incident with going into labor, because of the discharge of fluid. However, the difference between discharge fluid and urine is that it does not smell and most of the time the fluid has a pinkish tinge of blood in it, though sometimes it can also be clear.

Period-like pains is another sign that your baby is near. These contractions can start off mildly and get more intense closer to delivery. You will often feel the cramps in the low back area of your body and these contractions occur at specific intervals. As you get closer, the contractions happen more frequently, for longer, and they get a lot more intense.

Another sign that you are in labor, is a stringy vaginal discharge. The thick mucus is part of the plug in your cervix that has come loose.

It is a common concern for most women to know when the right time to go to the hospital is. After all you wouldn’t want to rush to the hospital ward because of a false alarm and be sent home only to rush back there again at a later date. You will want to get the timing right so you get to best assistance and care that you will need.

The worst thing you can do is to rush around your house looking for the appropriate contact numbers off the hospital, doctor or family members when your labor commences. So before it’s too late, make sure you have all the relevant numbers and/or addresses ready by your phone. Since everyone will be overly excited, it’s always best to be well prepared.
