Reclaiming The Kitchen Area

Our kitchens are easily the busiest room in our homes. From cooking and entertaining to a place for your kids to do their homework, play board games or work on their arts and crafts projects, it can be easily overrun with art supplies, outdated spices and unused or damaged utensils.
A kitchen should be a place for preparing meals and not be used as a store room. Sift through the cupboards and remove any old spices that you no longer need along with anything else you haven’t touched in years – you can’t keep things in order if you keep hoarding plastic storage containers that are 10 years old. If your drawers look a bit worn, this may be a great time to purchase a new set of liners and have them installed.
If your kitchen is tiny, you will need to start organizing your space more efficiently. As cupboard space is a real commodity, start storing your pots and empty contains within larger containers.
This is also a good time to make sure handles are securely fastened, so keep a screwdriver handy to tighten down skillet handles or pot lids if necessary.
Keep your dishes and silverware near your eating area or your dishwasher to shorten meal preparation or cleanup time.
Throw out any old plastic containers which lids no longer seal up properly. Discard the ones with cracks in them too and label the remaining ones so you know what spices are stored within each container more easily.
Alphabetize your spices and keep them near the stove on a spice rack or in a nearby cupboard on a revolving rack. Store food items that you use on a daily in a place you can easily grab them when needed.
Organize your pantry so that similar canned goods are in the same place and can be found easily when it’s time to cook meals. Make sure your children an easily reach items they use on a regular basis, and make sure items such as knives, scissors, and household chemicals are out of reach and secured in a locked cabinet. Utilize airtight food storage containers to lengthen the shelf life of your foods.
Keep any kitchen electrical equipment or appliances such as toasters away from the dish washing areas to be safe. Move them to your kitchen counter top or island (if you have one) and store the appliances that you rarely use in the pantry. This keeps the clutter to a minimum and helps you more easily maintain your kitchen in scissors future.
