Tummy pains are a very common problem among children and because there can be so variables involved, it’s hard for any parent to diagnose themselves. The pains may be a reaction from a bite from insects, food poisoning or even infections such as fevers.

There is more than one culprit of tummy aches – in fact several. Finding the reason for acute stomachaches is not an easy task and requires the experience of a medical professional in order to properly diagnose the illness. The leading cause for stomach-related pains are viruses.

They way you can differentiate between illnesses caused by viruses and the ones that stem from bacteria is usually the length of infection. With viral-based infections, it doesn’t last very long and is over before you know it. Bacteria related symptoms can last up to 7 days, depending on it’s severity. The symptoms are usually a mild fever, dehydration (purging of solids and liquids) and of course acute abdominal pains. Normally with viruses, there is nothing much you can do except have your kid drink lots of water and wait for symptoms to wear off.

Other causes of stomach pains can be allergy related too. Signs that your little boy or girl has allergies can range from diarrhea, cramps and in some more serious cases, rashes and nausea.

For the most part, the food allergy symptoms will quickly subside within a day of ceasing consumption of all dairy products. However, some children are extra-hypersensitive and these allergic reactions can be life-threatening. The medical term for this is anaphylaxis.

Of all the different types of stomach pains, appendicitis would have to be the worst of all. The pain can be excruciating and appendicitis is more common amongst children than adults. Appendicitis may require surgery to get the appendix removed if the pain persists.

Most kids will come running to you crying and complaining that their tummy hurts, and some will not. You’ll need to be tuned into your children and spot signs such as these before it’s too late.

As a parent, there is only so much you can do to protect your child’s health. Educating your children on hygiene and cleanliness is vital. When these illnesses occur there is nothing much you can do (besides visiting the doctor) except to comfort your child and make sure he or she gets plenty of rest.
